The Sacred Music of Vicente Lusitano

Join GEMS' Open Gates Project for a landmark performance celebrating the music of 16th-century Portuguese composer Vicente Lusitano (fl. mid-16th century), one of the earliest known Black composers in Europe. Long overlooked in the history of Western classical music, Lusitano’s remarkable choral music invites rediscovery and renewed appreciation. Under the direction of distinguished British conductor and leading Lusitano authority Joseph McHardy, with the creative guidance of OGP Creative Consultant Biraj Bakakarty, this program offers a rare opportunity to experience Lusitano’s music anew and place it within the rich, diverse history of Renaissance music. William Butler Yeats’ poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree” is the inspiration for this concert. First published in 1889, the poem recalls Yeat’s own deep desire to escape the grey city life of industrial London for a simple, quiet life of peace by the lapping water of the lake in the place of his youth in Sligo, Ireland. This was perhaps a fascinating time in 19th-century history, a wrestling of the merits and detriments of the Industrial Revolution and one in which we witness the first early music revival spearheaded by Arnold Dolmetsch and supported by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, of which George Bernard Shaw and William Morris were members. We will explore the music from a wider expanse of centuries (17th, 18th, 19th and even the 21st centuries) and with particular reverence for the history of a people that has never ceased to love the land and its simplicity.

No other composer touches both our minds, our hearts, and our souls like Johann Sebastian Bach. Enjoy an evening of cantata arias and instrumental music with celebrated artists: Richard Pittsinger, tenor; David Ross, flute; Cynthia Freivogel, violin; Loretta O’Sullivan, cello; Daniel Swenberg, theorbo; and Gwendolyn Toth, keyboard.

Music from The Dow Part Books (1581–1588)

The Dow Partbooks is a collection of five books compiled by Robert Dow at Oxford and is considered one of the most beautiful music manuscripts from the Tudor period. The repertoire is varied and includes Latin-texted motets, English-texted anthems and consort songs, and a selection of In nomines, instrumental works, and textless chansons. The partbooks hold the distinction of being the only known source for some of the pieces featured in the collection. Composers represented include William Byrd, Robert White, Robert Parsons, Alfonso Ferrabosco, John Shepherd, Thomas Tallis, William Mundy, Christopher Tye, Orlandus Lassus, John Taverner, Richard Farrant, and Peter Phillips.
